A family from Millhouses came to us with, in their words "a fairly big garden project with terrible access". They wanted to create an eco-garden keeping the carbon footprint on the materials sourced as low as possible.
The garden needed to offer a little bit of everything including storage, composting, raised beds for fruit and veg, a wildlife pond, play area for the children and space for spending time as a family.
After exploring the area we could instantly see the potential. It was exactly the kind of project we could help with and deliver on budget.
The solution involved creating dedicated zones using existing materials already in the garden and sourcing reclaimed materials such as stone walling from nearby Derbyshire.
We played around with some rough layout options and came up with a curved approach which became a key feature of the garden.
The curved layout evolved into a stepping stone pathway which framed the play and pond areas, creating a focal point between the upper and lower levels - something the customer loved!
We started by levelling the upper garden space and rebuilding the very tired drystone wall using existing stone we had excavated.
We built a new shed base positioned in an accessible corner of the garden. We used muscules we didn't know we had to move the shed here!
We created raised veg patch borders using sustainably sourced oak. One of our favourite materials.
It wasn't all plain sailing. We had to battle through some very wet conditions to keep the project on track.
Despite the weather we managed to progress the drystone wall and steps. Our pop up shelter keeping us just about dry!
Once the structural work was complete we cleared and levelled the lower area, marking out the postions of the pond, stepping stones and play area.
Once we'd lined and filled the pond we turned our attention to the planting scheme, trying different positions to achieve the perfect layout.
We then created the children's play area using child safe woodchip and a beautiful black powder coated stainless steel edging.
To finish off the upper level we built a brick green house base including stone pathway. The specification was to the nearest mm.
The family were delighted with the final results. The biggest thumbs up coming from their two year old daughter that couldn’t wait to go out and play!
We’ll be back in April to finish off the marginal pond plants. We can’t wait to see the garden once the raised borders are established and the children’s play equipment is in place.
